About Us

The AbuGoot lab blends natural biological discovery with molecular engineering to develop innovative tools for precise manipulation of DNA, RNA, and cellular states—creating a versatile cellular engineering toolbox. By harnessing the programmability of biological systems, these tools deepen our understanding of complex processes, reveal novel diagnostic insights, and drive the development of transformative therapeutic platforms. Our work explores diverse applications, including controlling cellular fate, uncovering the mechanisms of aging, and addressing genetic diseases. We are passionate about pushing the boundaries of biology as a programmable medium to unlock new scientific and medical possibilities.

Introducing EVOLVEpro, a few-shot active learning framework to rapidly improve protein activity using a combination of PLMs and protein activity predictors, achieving improved activity with as few as four rounds of evolution.
Programmable RNA Editing & Cleavage for Insertion, Substitution, and Erasure (PRECISE), a versatile RNA editing method for writing RNA of arbitrary length and sequence into existing pre-mRNAs via 5′ or 3′ trans-splicing.
The strengths and weaknesses of current CRISPR tools, their efficiency, precision, specificity, reliance on cellular DNA repair mechanisms and their applications in both fundamental biology and therapeutics.
